Claude Monet's *The Magpie* (1868-1869) captures a winter scene in the French countryside, showcasing the artist's innovative use of colour and light to depict the fleeting effects of nature.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French Impressionism, the artistic movement that shifted painting from historical, mythological, or realistic subjects to fleeting impressions of light and colour. Monet is best known for his series of paintings depicting his garden at Giverny, but he also produced many other landscapes and seascapes throughout his long career. Painted during the winter of 1868-1869, *The Magpie* is one of Monet's earliest and largest snow scenes. It depicts a solitary black magpie perched on a gate in the snow-covered French countryside. The scene is bathed in the cool light of a winter's day, with shadows rendered in shades of blue and violet, a technique that was criticised at the time but later became a hallmark of Impressionist painting. The village of Étretat is visible in the background. Monet submitted this painting to the Paris Salon of 1869, but it was rejected. The painting is now held in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
