A woodblock print by Toriyama Sekien showing a figure examining an object with a magnifying glass, accompanied by a spectral presence.
This woodblock print by Toriyama Sekien depicts a figure seated on a raised platform, engaged in the examination of a small object through a magnifying glass. The subject wears a wide, conical hat that obscures their face, while a sword tucked into their sash suggests the status of a samurai. Before them sits a low table holding incense sticks and small items, creating a quiet, scholarly atmosphere. Above, a ghostly, pale figure floats near the branches of a tree, a motif characteristic of Sekien, who is widely known for his encyclopaedic collections of yōkai, or supernatural beings.
Sekien was a master of the Kano school of painting before he turned his attention to the ukiyo-e woodblock print medium. His work often bridges the gap between traditional academic painting and the popular, mass-produced prints of the Edo period. The composition relies on a restrained palette, using soft ochre tones and black ink to define the forms. The lines are precise and calligraphic, typical of the period's printmaking techniques. The inclusion of the spectral figure introduces an element of the uncanny, a hallmark of Sekien's artistic output. By placing a mundane activity, such as the use of a magnifying glass, alongside a supernatural presence, the artist invites the viewer to consider the intersection of the everyday and the mysterious.
This print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance narrative detail with negative space. The platform and the tree frame the central figure, drawing the eye to the act of observation. The print is a fine example of the aesthetic sensibilities prevalent in late eighteenth-century Japan, where the study of nature and the supernatural were often intertwined in visual culture.
