John Collier painted The Last Voyage of Henry Hudson in 1881, capturing the final moments of the English explorer after he was set adrift by his mutinous crew in 1611. The composition depicts Hudson seated in a small open boat, accompanied by his young son and a crew member, surrounded by the desolate, icy waters of what is now Hudson Bay. The artist employs a sombre palette to convey the isolation and inevitable fate of the figures.

Collier, a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, was known for his technical precision and narrative clarity. In this work, he focuses on the psychological weight of the situation. Hudson is shown with a weary, resigned expression, his hand resting on his son's shoulder, while the boy looks up at him with a mixture of confusion and trust. The crew member, positioned in the foreground, appears detached, perhaps already resigned to the cold reality of their survival prospects.

Technically, the painting demonstrates the academic rigour common in late Victorian art. The textures of the fur garments, the weathered wood of the boat, and the translucent quality of the icebergs are rendered with careful attention to detail. The lighting is diffuse, characteristic of an overcast Arctic day, which flattens the space and emphasises the vast, uncaring environment. By choosing a moment of quiet despair rather than an action-oriented scene, Collier invites the viewer to consider the human cost of maritime exploration. The work remains a notable example of the historical genre, which sought to bring past events to life through realistic staging and emotional focus. It is currently held in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London.
