A detailed engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, depicting a section of angels from Michelangelo's Last Judgment, showcasing the technical precision of sixteenth-century printmaking.
This engraving is a section of a larger, monumental composition by Giorgio Ghisi, based on the fresco by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. Ghisi, a master of the burin, produced this multi-sheet reproduction to capture the scale and complexity of the original work. This specific sheet, marked with the letter G, focuses on the figures of angels sounding trumpets to announce the final judgment.
The composition displays the characteristic tension of the Mannerist period. The figures possess elongated, muscular forms, rendered with a high degree of anatomical precision. Ghisi employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to create volume and depth, allowing the figures to emerge from the dense, swirling clouds. The interaction between the solid forms of the bodies and the atmospheric treatment of the heavens demonstrates the technical capability of sixteenth-century printmaking.
By breaking the massive fresco into smaller, manageable sheets, Ghisi allowed collectors to own a version of a work that was otherwise inaccessible to those who could not travel to Rome. The print reflects the period's interest in disseminating the visual language of the High Renaissance through the medium of engraving. The focus here is on the dramatic movement of the figures, their twisted poses, and the sense of urgency conveyed through their gestures. The print remains a record of the original fresco's state during the mid-sixteenth century, before later interventions altered the appearance of Michelangelo's work. It is a study in light, shadow, and the translation of painted form into the linear language of the copper plate.
