A detailed engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, reproducing a section of Michelangelo's Last Judgment with technical precision and anatomical complexity.
This engraving by Giorgio Ghisi represents a section of a larger composition depicting the Last Judgment. Ghisi, a master of the burin, was active in Mantua and Rome during the sixteenth century. This work is part of a series of ten plates that reproduce the monumental fresco by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. The print demonstrates the technical precision required to translate the muscular, contorted figures of the High Renaissance into the medium of copperplate engraving.
The composition is characterised by a dense arrangement of figures in various states of physical exertion and emotional distress. Ghisi employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to model the anatomy of the figures, creating a sense of volume and weight that mirrors the sculptural quality of the original fresco. The figures are depicted in complex, twisting poses, a hallmark of the Mannerist style that favoured artificiality and tension over the balanced harmony of earlier periods. The absence of a traditional background allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction between the bodies, which seem to tumble through a void.
As a printmaker, Ghisi was known for his ability to capture the spirit of large-scale paintings in a portable format. This specific sheet, marked with the letter F, captures a cluster of figures from the lower portion of the original scene. The work provides an insight into how Renaissance imagery was disseminated across Europe through the medium of print. Collectors of the period valued these engravings for their ability to bring the grandeur of Italian frescoes into private studies and libraries. The print remains a study in the application of line to convey the dramatic intensity of the subject matter, reflecting the technical standards of the Italian school of engraving during the mid-sixteenth century.
