A detailed engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, representing a section of Michelangelo's The Last Judgment. This print demonstrates the technical precision of 16th-century Italian Mannerist printmaking.
This engraving is a segment of a larger, ambitious reproduction of Michelangelo's fresco, The Last Judgment, located in the Sistine Chapel. Giorgio Ghisi, a skilled Italian printmaker, executed this series of ten plates between 1547 and 1549. By breaking down the monumental wall painting into individual sheets, Ghisi allowed for the wider dissemination of Michelangelo's complex composition to an audience beyond Rome.
Plate E focuses on a specific grouping of figures, capturing the muscularity and torsion characteristic of the Mannerist style. Ghisi employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to translate the three-dimensional volume of the original painted figures into the medium of engraving. The lines follow the contours of the anatomy, creating a sense of weight and physical presence. The figures are arranged in a dense, overlapping configuration, which reflects the crowded nature of the original fresco. The letter E, visible in the lower right corner, identifies this as one part of the larger multi-plate assembly.
Ghisi was known for his technical precision, and this work demonstrates his ability to manage complex tonal transitions. The interplay of light and shadow across the figures creates a sense of drama, consistent with the theological gravity of the subject matter. As a reproduction, this print provides insight into how Renaissance masters were interpreted by their contemporaries. It remains a technical achievement in the history of printmaking, showing the transition of large-scale mural art into the portable format of the copperplate engraving. The work is held in several major museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum, where it is studied for its fidelity to the original composition and its mastery of the burin.
