This engraving by Nicolò della Casa represents a section of the monumental Last Judgment fresco painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. Working in the mid-sixteenth century, della Casa translated the muscular, dynamic forms of the original mural into the precise medium of copperplate engraving. The print captures the chaotic energy of the scene, focusing on the figures surrounding the cross and the instruments of the Passion.
The composition is defined by a dense arrangement of figures, each rendered with anatomical precision. Della Casa employs fine, parallel hatching to model the musculature of the bodies, creating a sense of volume and weight despite the two-dimensional surface. The figures appear to float upon clouds, a device used to suggest a celestial space. The artist pays close attention to the expressive gestures of the figures, who interact with the heavy wooden cross and other symbols of the crucifixion.
