Jules Breton, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century French painting, dedicated much of his career to the depiction of rural life in the Artois region. In this work, Breton captures the final moments of the harvest, a subject he returned to frequently throughout his career. The composition focuses on a group of women gathering the remnants of wheat left behind after the main harvest, a practice known as gleaning.

Breton employs a soft, atmospheric light that suggests the end of the day. The sun, depicted as a low, glowing orb on the horizon, casts a warm, golden hue across the field and the figures. This treatment of light softens the physical labour of the subjects, imbuing the scene with a sense of quiet dignity.
