A detailed ink and wash drawing depicting the biblical Judgement of Solomon, rendered in the style of the Dutch Golden Age.
This drawing depicts the biblical narrative of the Judgement of Solomon, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Cornelis Brouwer employs a structured composition, placing the king at the centre upon an elevated throne, framed by a canopy. The scene captures the moment of legal deliberation, with the two mothers positioned before the monarch. One woman stands, gesturing towards the child, while the other kneels in supplication. The surrounding figures, including soldiers and advisors, provide a sense of courtly atmosphere. The artist uses a monochromatic palette of brown ink and wash, which creates a sense of depth through subtle tonal variations. The line work is precise, defining the folds of the garments and the architectural elements of the throne room. Brouwer focuses on the psychological tension between the figures, using posture and gesture to convey the gravity of the dispute. The architectural setting, with its arched ceiling and classical motifs, reflects the artistic conventions of the period, where biblical stories were often transposed into contemporary or semi-classical settings. This work demonstrates the technical skill involved in ink wash drawings of the seventeenth century. The artist balances the crowded scene by using the central figure of Solomon as an anchor, allowing the viewer to navigate the narrative from the kneeling mother to the standing claimant. The use of light and shadow, achieved through the application of wash, gives the figures a sculptural quality, separating them from the background architecture. This print offers a clear view of the draughtsmanship and compositional strategies common to Dutch historical illustration of the era, providing an insight into how artists interpreted classical and religious texts for a contemporary audience.
