A classic 1917 portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, featuring his signature elongated forms and a melancholic, introspective mood.
Amedeo Modigliani painted The Italian Woman in 1917 during his time in Paris. The work displays his signature approach to portraiture: elongated facial features, a swan-like neck, and a simplified, mask-like visage. The subject sits in a three-quarter view, her head tilted gently to one side, creating a sense of quiet introspection. Her eyes are rendered as narrow, almond-shaped slits, devoid of pupils, which contributes to the detached, melancholic atmosphere common in the artist's later works.
The composition is restrained. The subject wears a dark, heavy garment with a white collar that provides a stark contrast against the muted, textured background. Her hands are folded neatly at the base of the frame, resting upon a curved, ochre-toned surface. Modigliani uses a limited palette of earthy browns, blacks, and soft greys, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the rhythmic, flowing lines of the figure's silhouette. The brushwork is visible but controlled, suggesting a deliberate balance between the structural geometry of the face and the fluid curves of the body.
This portrait reflects the artist's interest in both the Italian Renaissance tradition and the contemporary influence of African sculpture. By reducing the human form to its essential lines, Modigliani creates a psychological distance between the viewer and the sitter. The painting is a study in poise and reduction, capturing a specific mood through minimal detail. It remains a representative example of his mature style, where the physical distortion of the subject serves to communicate a sense of internal stillness rather than literal representation.
