Joseph Wright of Derby, often associated with the scientific and industrial advancements of the eighteenth century, produced The Iron Forge in 1772. This work captures the interior of a blacksmith's shop, a subject that allowed Wright to explore his fascination with dramatic lighting effects, known as chiaroscuro. The scene is dominated by the intense, glowing heat of the iron being worked, which casts deep shadows across the brick walls and the figures present.

In the centre, a blacksmith stands with arms crossed, observing the process, while another worker operates the heavy hammer. To the right, a family group watches the activity, their faces illuminated by the firelight. This inclusion of a family unit within an industrial setting was a common motif for Wright, who often sought to humanise the technological progress of the era. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, cavernous space of the forge and the bright, artificial light emanating from the furnace.

Wright was a member of the Lunar Society, a group of thinkers and industrialists who met to discuss the latest developments in science and engineering. His paintings frequently documented the shift from traditional craftsmanship to the mechanised processes of the Industrial Revolution. By focusing on the physical labour and the tools of the trade, Wright provided a record of the period's changing social and economic structures.
