This print is plate 19 from the second volume of 'Travels in the Interior of North America', a publication documenting the 1832-1834 expedition led by Prince Maximilian of Wied. Karl Bodmer, a Swiss painter, accompanied the expedition to record the geography, flora, fauna, and indigenous cultures of the American West. His work provides a detailed visual record of the Mandan people, a group whose traditional way of life was documented shortly before the devastating smallpox epidemic of 1837.
