Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, remains one of the most influential figures of the early Qing Dynasty. As a member of the Ming royal family who became a Buddhist monk, his life was defined by political upheaval and personal displacement. Shitao rejected the rigid adherence to traditional styles that dominated the art circles of his time.
