A fine stipple engraving from 1797 depicting a quiet scene of rural domestic life, featuring a woman sewing and a man with a bowl.
The Industrious Cottager, published in 1797, is a fine example of the stipple engraving technique popularised in late eighteenth-century Britain. This print, engraved by Charles Knight after a design by Francis Wheatley, captures a quiet moment of rural domesticity. The composition centres on a young woman seated outside a cottage, focused on her needlework, while a man stands beside her, holding a bowl and spoon. A small dog looks up at the man, adding a sense of life to the scene.
Knight was a skilled engraver, known for his ability to translate the soft tonal qualities of original paintings into the medium of print. The stipple method, which uses small dots rather than lines to create shading, allows for the gentle transitions of light and shadow seen on the figures and the textured brickwork of the cottage wall. The oval format, common for prints of this period, draws the eye toward the interaction between the two figures. The inclusion of everyday objects, such as the basket of yarn and the simple wooden furniture, reflects the contemporary interest in the lives of the rural working class, often presented with a degree of idealisation.
This work was published by Bull & Jeffreys on Ludgate Hill, London, as indicated by the inscription at the base of the print. The dual title, provided in both English and French, suggests the international market for such prints during the late Georgian era. The print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the time, where scenes of moral virtue and domestic industry were highly sought after for home decoration. The technical precision of the engraving ensures that the textures of the clothing and the surrounding environment remain clear, providing a detailed record of late eighteenth-century rural life.
