Mattia Preti's 'The Incredulity of Saint Thomas' captures the dramatic biblical scene with dynamic composition and expressive figures, rendered in warm, earthy tones and stark contrasts.
Mattia Preti (1613-1699) was an Italian Baroque artist who spent much of his career in Southern Italy and Malta. He is known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, a style influenced by Caravaggio. Preti's works often depict religious and historical subjects, characterised by dynamic compositions and expressive figures. 'The Incredulity of Saint Thomas' portrays the biblical scene where the Apostle Thomas doubts the resurrection of Christ until he can physically touch his wounds. The painting is composed with a strong diagonal emphasis, drawing the viewer's eye from the lower left to the upper right. Christ stands with an open wound, inviting Thomas to examine it. The surrounding figures, presumably the other apostles, are rendered with varied expressions of awe and curiosity. The colour palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, with stark contrasts between light and shadow that heighten the drama of the scene. The figures are muscular and realistically rendered, typical of Preti's style.
