The Immortal Li Tieguai - Su Renshan

Su Renshan, a painter from Guangdong during the Qing Dynasty, produced this depiction of Li Tieguai, one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese mythology. The work demonstrates the artist's unconventional approach to traditional figure painting. Rather than adhering to the rigid academic standards of his time, Su employed a minimalist, expressive brushwork style that prioritises character and movement over anatomical precision.

Li Tieguai is traditionally represented as a beggar with a crutch, often associated with his ability to travel outside his physical body. In this composition, the figure occupies the lower portion of the vertical scroll, leaving a significant expanse of negative space above. This void serves to draw the viewer's attention to the economy of the ink strokes used to define the immortal's hunched posture and tattered garments. The calligraphic quality of the lines is evident, showing a deliberate, swift execution that captures the essence of the subject with minimal detail.

The upper section of the scroll features bold, vertical calligraphy, which balances the visual weight of the figure below. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of the literati tradition, yet Su Renshan's specific execution remains distinct for its raw, almost skeletal aesthetic. The muted palette, restricted to shades of black ink against the aged paper, reinforces the ascetic nature of the immortal.
