A woodblock print from a 1650 edition of The Tale of Genji, featuring the refined line work and courtly aesthetic of Yamamoto Shunshō.
This woodblock print originates from a 1650 edition of the Genji Monogatari, or The Tale of Genji, illustrated by the artist Yamamoto Shunshō. The work represents a significant moment in the history of Japanese book production, where classical literature became accessible through the medium of printed illustrations. Shunshō, a master of the Tosa school, brought a refined sensibility to these depictions, balancing the demands of narrative clarity with the aesthetic conventions of the seventeenth century.
The composition follows the traditional fukinuki-yatai, or blown-off roof, perspective. This technique allows the viewer to observe the interior scenes of the imperial court from an elevated angle, revealing the interactions between characters within the architectural framework. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the woodblock carving techniques of the era. The figures are rendered with minimal facial detail, focusing instead on the posture and the patterns of their courtly robes to convey status and emotion. The surrounding text, written in a fluid, cursive script, integrates with the image to form a cohesive page layout. This balance between the written word and the visual image is a hallmark of the period's literary culture.
As a fine art print, this piece offers a window into the aesthetic values of the early Edo period. The stark contrast between the black ink and the aged paper tone provides a clear view of the artist's draftsmanship. It is a study in restraint, where the negative space and the arrangement of architectural elements guide the eye across the scene. This print is suitable for those interested in the history of Japanese literature, the development of woodblock printing, and the visual language of the Tosa school.
