Description
A monumental depiction of the Parisian horse market, capturing the raw energy and anatomical precision of Percheron horses in motion.
Rosa Bonheur, a French artist known for her anatomical precision, completed this large-scale work between 1852 and 1855. The painting depicts the horse market held on the Boulevard de l'Hôpital in Paris, near the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. Bonheur spent eighteen months sketching at the market, often dressing in men's clothing to move through the crowds with greater ease and to observe the animals without attracting undue attention. The composition features a line of powerful Percheron horses being led by handlers. The animals are shown in various states of motion, from trotting to rearing, which creates a sense of kinetic energy across the canvas. Bonheur utilised a low horizon line to increase the perceived scale of the horses, making them appear monumental against the backdrop of the Parisian trees and the distant dome of the hospital. The lighting is dramatic, with clouds gathering overhead, casting shadows that define the muscular forms of the horses and the dust kicked up from the ground. Technically, the work demonstrates Bonheur's mastery of animal anatomy and texture. She captures the sheen of the coats, the tension in the muscles, and the varied temperaments of the horses. The painting was first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1853, where it received significant acclaim. It was later acquired by the American collector William P. Wright and eventually donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This print captures the scale and detail of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's brushwork and the dynamic arrangement of the figures.
