A Realist study of a Russian peasant family transporting hay across a calm river. Painted by Fyodor Vasilyev around 1870, this work captures the atmospheric light of the Volga region.
Fyodor Vasilyev was a Russian painter who died at the age of twenty-three. Despite his short life, he influenced the development of Russian landscape painting. He was a contemporary of Ivan Shishkin and Ivan Kramskoy. This work, Peasant Family in a Boat, was painted around 1870. It depicts a group of people on a river, likely the Volga, where Vasilyev travelled with Shishkin during the summer months. The composition centres on a rustic boat laden with freshly cut grass. A man stands at the stern, steering the boat with a single long oar. Several figures rest among the greenery, including a woman in a red headscarf. The boat has a simple, makeshift sail that catches the light. Vasilyev uses a palette of pale blues, soft yellows, earthy greens, and muted reds. The water is still and mirrors the hazy sky. Vasilyev was known for his ability to capture atmospheric conditions. In this painting, the light suggests a humid, quiet day. The distant shoreline is blurred by a light mist. The artist avoids sentimentalising the subjects. Instead, he focuses on the relationship between the figures and their environment. The brushwork is precise in the details of the boat and figures but becomes broader in the sky and water. This approach creates a sense of space and air. The painting belongs to the Realist tradition. It documents the daily life of the Russian peasantry without artifice. Vasilyev often focused on the changing states of nature, such as approaching storms or the transition between day and night. Here, the calm water and soft light create a quiet mood. The work is held in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It remains a significant example of nineteenth-century Russian genre painting.
