A nineteenth-century woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting courtesans resting at the Horaitei restaurant overlooking Shinobazu Pond in Edo.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Famous Restaurants of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the late Tenpo era. The scene depicts the Horaitei, a well-known establishment located at Ikenohata, overlooking the Shinobazu Pond in the Ueno district. Hiroshige captures a group of courtesans and their young attendants, known as kamuro, taking a moment of repose. They are positioned on an elevated wooden veranda, which provides a wide view of the water and the distant shoreline. The composition uses a horizontal format to emphasise the expanse of the pond. In the background, the Benten Shrine is visible on its island, surrounded by the low roofs of the city. The water is rendered with a graded blue wash, a technique known as bokashi, which suggests depth and atmosphere. The figures in the foreground are dressed in patterned kimonos, their poses suggesting casual conversation and rest after the activity of cherry blossom viewing. One woman adjusts her hair while others look out towards the scenery. Hiroshige was a master of integrating human activity with specific geographical locations. Unlike his more famous landscape series, this work focuses on the social spaces of Edo. The architectural elements of the restaurant frame the scene, using diagonal lines to lead the eye from the interior space out towards the natural environment. The use of colour is balanced, with the warm tones of the wooden architecture contrasting against the cool blues and greens of the water and foliage. This print provides a record of the leisure culture and urban topography of nineteenth-century Japan.
