A classic High Renaissance depiction of the Holy Family by the Ferrarese master Garofalo, featuring soft modelling and a serene landscape background.
Benvenuto Tisi, known as Garofalo, was a central figure of the Ferrarese school during the Italian Renaissance. This work depicts the Holy Family alongside the infant Saint John the Baptist, a common subject that allowed artists to explore domestic intimacy within a sacred context. The composition is structured with the Virgin Mary seated centrally, holding the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph and the young Saint John the Baptist are positioned to the right. The figures are set against a backdrop of classical architectural ruins and a distant, atmospheric mountain range, which reflects the influence of Raphael and the Venetian school on Garofalo's practice.
The painting is characterised by a balanced arrangement of figures, typical of the High Renaissance style. Garofalo employs a soft, sfumato-like application of paint to model the faces and limbs of the figures, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The colour palette is composed of deep reds, blues, and earthy ochres, which provide a sense of harmony across the panel. The arched top of the painting suggests it was originally intended for an ecclesiastical setting, perhaps as part of a larger altarpiece or a private devotional frame.
Garofalo was known for his ability to synthesise the classicism of Rome with the more decorative tendencies of his native Ferrara. In this piece, the attention to the textures of the drapery and the careful rendering of the landscape details demonstrate his technical precision. The interaction between the children, with the Christ Child reaching towards his cousin, introduces a narrative element that softens the formality of the religious subject. This print captures the subtle gradations of light and shadow present in the original panel, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to human form and spatial depth.
