A delicate etching by Simone Cantarini depicting the Holy Family during their rest in Egypt, rendered with fluid, expressive lines.
This etching by Simone Cantarini captures a quiet moment during the Flight into Egypt. The composition focuses on the intimacy of the Holy Family, with the Virgin Mary seated on the ground, cradling the infant Jesus in her lap. To the right, Saint Joseph is depicted in a seated position, absorbed in reading. The scene is rendered with a characteristic economy of line, typical of Cantarini's graphic work, which often shows the influence of his teacher, Guido Reni, while maintaining a distinct, personal touch in the handling of form and shadow.
Cantarini, a painter and printmaker from Pesaro, was a significant figure in the Bolognese school of the seventeenth century. His etchings are noted for their fluid, calligraphic line quality, which suggests form without the need for heavy cross-hatching. In this work, the figures are placed within a sparse, suggested environment, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the domestic nature of the subject. The drapery of Mary's garments is handled with soft, rhythmic strokes, creating a sense of volume and weight that contrasts with the lighter, more rapid marks used to define the surrounding foliage and the ground.
As a printmaker, Cantarini was highly regarded for his ability to translate the grace of his painted compositions into the medium of etching. This piece demonstrates his skill in balancing light and shadow through varied line density. The print offers a glimpse into the devotional art of the period, where biblical figures were frequently portrayed in humanised, everyday settings. The work remains a fine example of Italian Baroque printmaking, reflecting the technical proficiency and stylistic elegance that defined Cantarini's short but productive career.
