Description
A woodblock print by Yamamura Toyonari depicting the heroine Koman from the play Tanba Yosaku. The print showcases the artist's skill in capturing theatrical moments with delicate lines and muted colours.
Yamamura Toyonari (1885-1942) was a Japanese artist known for his contributions to the Shin-hanga art movement. This movement, which translates to "New Prints", revitalised traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing techniques while incorporating Western artistic elements. Toyonari, also known as Koka, was particularly recognised for his depictions of Kabuki theatre, capturing the essence of the actors and their roles. He studied with Tomioka Eisen and produced illustrations, posters, and prints throughout his career. This print portrays the heroine Koman from the play Tanba Yosaku. Koman is depicted in a full-length portrait, wearing a red and white floral kimono. She stands in a field of green foliage under a pale sky with a light blue moon. The composition is flat, typical of Ukiyo-e, with delicate lines and muted colours. The print captures a theatrical moment, reflecting Toyonari's interest in Kabuki and his skill in portraying characters from the stage.
