A detailed etching by Nicolaes Berchem the Elder depicting a herdsman and a woman with a child guiding livestock across a stream.
Nicolaes Berchem the Elder was a central figure in the Dutch Italianate movement, a group of artists who travelled to Italy and returned to the Netherlands with a fascination for Mediterranean light and pastoral subjects. This etching, The Herd, Crossing the Brook, demonstrates his technical command of the medium and his interest in the daily life of rural travellers. The composition features a herdsman mounted on a donkey, guiding a group of cattle, sheep, and a goat through a shallow stream. To the right, a woman carrying a child stands in the water, providing a human element to the scene.
Berchem uses a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the animals, the folds of the figures' clothing, and the rocky terrain. The light appears to emanate from the upper left, casting soft shadows that give the scene a sense of depth and atmosphere. The artist's signature, 'Berghem fe.', is visible in the upper right corner, indicating his role as the etcher of the plate. This work belongs to a broader tradition of pastoral imagery that was popular among seventeenth-century Dutch collectors, who valued the idealised, tranquil depictions of rural life. The scene avoids the dramatic tension of history painting, opting instead for a quiet, observational quality. The balance between the animals and the human figures creates a harmonious arrangement, typical of Berchem's approach to printmaking. His ability to render the anatomy of the livestock with such precision, while maintaining a fluid, sketch-like quality in the background, is characteristic of his mature style. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch Golden Age, where the rural idyll served as a frequent subject for both painters and printmakers.
