Matthias Stom
A dramatic Baroque scene depicting the biblical healing of Tobit, rendered with the characteristic chiaroscuro and naturalism of Matthias Stom.
Matthias Stom, a Dutch painter who spent much of his career in Italy, produced this work during his time in Rome or Naples. The composition depicts the biblical narrative from the Book of Tobit, in which the Archangel Raphael instructs Tobit to heal his father's blindness using the gall of a fish. Stom focuses on the physical interaction between the figures, capturing the moment of medical intervention with a sense of quiet gravity. The painting displays the influence of Caravaggio, particularly in the use of chiaroscuro. Stom employs a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figures into the foreground, illuminated by a directed light source. This technique creates a dramatic contrast, drawing the viewer's eye to the delicate gesture of the angel and the weathered features of the elderly Tobit. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep ochres, muted blues, and earthy tones to maintain a sombre, reverent mood. Stom's approach to the subject is grounded in human observation. The figures are rendered with a focus on naturalistic detail, from the texture of the drapery to the anatomical precision of the hands. The inclusion of the small dog at the lower left serves as a traditional iconographic reference to the journey of Tobit and Raphael. By stripping away extraneous detail, Stom directs attention to the emotional and physical reality of the scene. This work is characteristic of the artist's ability to synthesise Northern European realism with the dramatic lighting conventions popularised by his Italian contemporaries. The composition remains balanced, with the figures arranged to guide the eye through the narrative sequence of the healing process.
