Shi Rui, an active painter during the mid-Ming Dynasty, produced this work depicting the legendary Peach-Blossom Spring. The narrative originates from the poet Tao Yuanming, describing a fisherman who discovers a hidden utopia isolated from the turmoil of the outside world. The composition follows the traditional Shan Shui format, prioritising the relationship between towering mountain forms and the human figures dwelling within the valley.

The visual structure employs a vertical orientation, guiding the eye from the foreground rocks and pine trees towards the distant, mist-shrouded peaks. Shi Rui utilises ink washes to define the craggy textures of the mountains, while the architecture of the small village is rendered with precise, controlled brushwork.
