A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitsuya depicting a chaotic samurai battle at the Horikawa residence.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya depicts a chaotic scene from the Horikawa incident, a historical event involving the Minamoto clan. Yoshitsuya, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, specialised in musha-e, or warrior prints. The composition spans three panels, creating a wide panoramic view of the conflict.
The scene is packed with activity. Samurai in traditional armour engage in combat across multiple levels of a wooden structure. The architecture provides a grid-like framework that organises the dense arrangement of figures. Arrows fly through the air, and banners display various clan crests, adding to the visual noise of the battle. A large pine tree occupies the centre, acting as a vertical anchor amidst the horizontal movement of the soldiers.
The colour palette relies on muted tones of indigo, ochre, and brick red. These colours are characteristic of the mid-nineteenth-century Edo period print market. The artist employs thin, precise lines to define the armour, weapons, and facial expressions of the combatants. The perspective is flattened, typical of the period, allowing the viewer to observe the entire skirmish simultaneously.
This work demonstrates the technical skill required to produce multi-panel prints. The registration of the blocks ensures that the lines flow across the seams of the paper. The print serves as a record of the popular interest in historical narratives and military tales during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. It captures the energy of the clash while maintaining the formal constraints of the woodblock medium.
