A detailed Flemish engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicting the biblical allegory of the Good Shepherd within a pastoral landscape.
This engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicts the biblical allegory of the Good Shepherd. The composition is structured around a pastoral scene, where a shepherd figure tends to his flock near a rustic structure. The background opens into a wide, rolling countryside, featuring small dwellings and a distant town, characteristic of the Flemish tradition of blending religious narrative with detailed rural observation.
Collaert, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, demonstrates technical precision in his use of line. The work employs varied hatching techniques to create depth and texture, from the rough bark of the foreground tree to the soft wool of the sheep. The inclusion of Latin inscriptions at the base provides theological context, drawing from the Book of Ezekiel and the Gospel of John. These texts contrast the care of the shepherd with the neglect of those who exploit the flock, a common theme in Counter-Reformation art.
The print reflects the stylistic conventions of the late sixteenth century, where the influence of artists like Hans Bol is evident in the panoramic view and the treatment of the figures. The scene is not merely a depiction of rural life, but a moralising image intended for contemplation. The balanced arrangement of the foreground elements against the expansive horizon creates a sense of order and clarity. This piece is a fine example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Antwerp print workshops of the period, which were responsible for disseminating religious and moral imagery across Europe. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a work from this era, adding to its character as a historical document of printmaking history.
