Description
A 1573 engraving by Philips Galle depicting the classical myth of the Golden Age, featuring figures in a harmonious, untamed natural setting.
This engraving, titled The Golden Age (Aureum Saeculum), was produced by the Dutch master Philips Galle in 1573. Based on a design by Gillis Coignet, the work depicts the classical myth of the Golden Age, a period of primordial peace and harmony. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a format often used in the sixteenth century for decorative prints and book illustrations. The scene presents a group of nude figures inhabiting a lush, untamed environment. They are shown in various states of repose and activity, interacting with the natural world in a manner that suggests a life free from labour or conflict. The figures are rendered with the muscularity and elongated proportions characteristic of the Mannerist style, reflecting the influence of Italian art on Northern European printmakers of the period. The trees and rocky terrain are executed with precise, rhythmic hatching, which provides a sense of volume and texture to the forms. Philips Galle was a central figure in the Antwerp print trade, known for his technical proficiency and his ability to translate the works of contemporary painters into widely distributed engravings. This print demonstrates his command of the burin, using varying line weights to create depth within the circular boundary. The Latin inscription at the base, 'AVREVM SAECVLVM', confirms the subject matter, while the artist's signature and the date are clearly visible within the lower portion of the plate. This work offers a window into the intellectual and artistic preoccupations of the late Renaissance, where classical themes were frequently revisited to explore concepts of human nature and the idealised past.
