The exterior shutters of Bosch's masterpiece, rendered in monochromatic grisaille to depict the third day of Creation.
This image depicts the exterior shutters of the famous triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights, by Hieronymus Bosch. Unlike the colourful and chaotic interior panels, the exterior is executed in grisaille, a technique using shades of grey to mimic the appearance of stone sculpture. This choice of palette creates a stark contrast, preparing the viewer for the transition from the mundane world to the complex moral narratives contained within the closed panels. The composition presents a transparent sphere, often interpreted as the world during the third day of Creation. Within the globe, one observes a primordial earth, featuring rocky formations, sparse vegetation, and water. A small figure of God sits in the upper left corner, observing the unfolding creation. The use of a circular form within a rectangular frame emphasises the isolation of the world, suspended in a dark, void-like space. The application of paint is precise, focusing on the subtle gradations of light and shadow to define the curvature of the sphere and the textures of the emerging terrain. Bosch employs this monochromatic approach to suggest a world before the introduction of human sin and the subsequent corruption of nature. The lack of colour serves to focus the viewer on the structural elements of the scene, reflecting the theological concerns of the period regarding the origin of the universe. The Latin inscriptions at the top of the panels, taken from Psalm 33, further ground the work in its religious context, stating that God spoke and the world came into being. This exterior view functions as a protective shell, concealing the moral warnings and allegories of the interior until the work is opened for contemplation.
