A colour aquatint by Jacques Villon, 'The Game of Solitaire' depicts a woman reclining with playing cards and a dog. The print uses a limited palette and textured aquatint to create an intimate scene.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and Post-Impressionist painter and printmaker. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon adopted his pseudonym in honour of the poet François Villon. He is known for his Cubist-inspired paintings and prints, as well as his contributions to the development of modern art. 'The Game of Solitaire' presents a woman reclining on a red surface, seemingly absorbed in a game of cards. A small dog sits attentively by her side. The composition is rendered in a limited palette of red, yellow, and beige, with black accents. The background features a subtle floral pattern, adding a decorative element to the scene. The use of aquatint gives the print a soft, textured quality, enhancing the intimate atmosphere of the subject matter. The work reflects the influence of Post-Impressionism in its focus on everyday life and its use of colour and form to convey mood and emotion.
