Description
A set of four detailed engravings by Crispijn van de Passe (I) depicting the classical elements of Fire, Air, Water, and Earth within ornate circular medallions.
This print features a collection of four circular medallions, each representing one of the classical elements: Ignis (Fire), Aer (Air), Aqua (Water), and Terra (Earth). Crispijn van de Passe (I) was a prolific Dutch engraver and draughtsman whose work reflects the technical precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking. Each medallion is framed by a decorative border populated with creatures and symbols associated with the specific element depicted in the central scene. In the upper-left medallion, Ignis is represented by a central figure surrounded by salamanders and flames. The upper-right medallion, Aer, displays a figure amidst various birds, including an eagle and a turkey. The lower-left medallion, Aqua, depicts a figure pouring water, encircled by aquatic life such as fish and crustaceans. Finally, the lower-right medallion, Terra, shows a figure surrounded by terrestrial animals, including lions and horses. The composition is highly organised, balancing the central allegorical figures with the dense, ornamental borders that define the Mannerist aesthetic of the period. Van de Passe was instrumental in disseminating classical and allegorical themes through his engravings. His ability to render fine detail within a confined circular space demonstrates his mastery of the burin. The work is presented here as a plate from a larger collection, preserving the original typography and layout of the historical catalogue. This print offers a clear view into the symbolic language of the Renaissance, where the natural world was categorised and personified through mythological and elemental archetypes. The precision of the line work allows for a close examination of the individual creatures and the subtle modelling of the central figures, providing a window into the artistic priorities of the Dutch Golden Age precursors.
