A portrait of a young woman carrying wildflowers, painted by the Italian Academic artist Eugene de Blaas in 1910.
Eugene de Blaas, an Italian painter of the Academic school, produced this work in 1910. The painting depicts a young woman walking through a meadow, carrying a basket and a large bouquet of wildflowers. Her attire consists of a soft lilac dress and a white shawl, which catches the breeze. The background features a gentle slope with sparse trees, rendered in a light, airy palette that suggests a spring morning.
De Blaas was known for his technical precision and his focus on the daily lives of the Venetian working class. His approach to portraiture often involved a polished finish, where brushstrokes are largely obscured to create a smooth, lifelike surface. The subject gazes directly at the viewer, a common device in his work to establish a connection between the painted figure and the audience. The composition balances the figure against the open space of the field, using the vertical lines of the trees to frame the subject.
This piece reflects the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century interest in genre painting, where artists sought to capture idealized scenes of rural life. The colour palette is dominated by soft pastels, with the lilac of the dress providing a central tone that is echoed in the subtle shadows of the landscape. The flowers themselves are rendered with careful attention to detail, providing a contrast to the broader, more atmospheric treatment of the sky and the distant hills. The work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to combine portraiture with outdoor settings, maintaining a consistent focus on the human figure as the primary subject of the composition.
