Domenichino, a prominent figure of the Bolognese School, produced this work as part of a larger decorative cycle for the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati. The scene depicts the classical myth of the satyr Marsyas, who is punished by Apollo for losing a musical contest. The composition follows the conventions of the early seventeenth-century Baroque, balancing dramatic narrative with a structured, classical approach to space and form.

The figures are arranged across the foreground, with Marsyas bound to a tree trunk as the central focus of the action. Apollo, draped in a red mantle, stands to the right, overseeing the execution. The surrounding figures, including nymphs and attendants, react with varied expressions of distress and observation. Domenichino employs a clear, rational arrangement of the human form, reflecting his training under Annibale Carracci. The anatomical precision of the figures is balanced by the soft, atmospheric treatment of the background, which features a distant town and rolling hills typical of the period's interest in classical settings.

The colour palette remains grounded in earthy tones, with muted greens, ochres, and soft blues defining the natural environment. The light is even and clear, avoiding the extreme chiaroscuro that would later dominate the high Baroque. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate complex mythological narratives into a coherent, readable visual structure. The decorative border framing the scene suggests its original function as a wall-mounted fresco, designed to complement the architectural environment of the villa.
