A 1931 oil painting by Kenneth Hayes Miller depicting women in a New York department store fitting room, rendered with sculptural form and social realism.
Kenneth Hayes Miller, a central figure in the Fourteenth Street School, produced The Fitting Room in 1931. This work captures a mundane moment of urban commerce during the interwar period. Miller often focused his attention on the daily lives of women in New York City, specifically within the context of department stores and shopping districts. The composition presents a group of women in a confined, interior space, engaged in the act of trying on garments.
The figures possess a sculptural, rounded quality, a stylistic trait Miller developed through his study of Renaissance masters. He applied this classical approach to contemporary subjects, creating a sense of weight and volume that distinguishes his work from the flatter styles of his contemporaries. The scene is organised around the central figure in a yellow dress, who is being assisted by a saleswoman. The surrounding figures, dressed in the fashions of the early 1930s, create a sense of social interaction and observation. The checkered floor and the arrangement of clothing racks define the space, providing a clear sense of the environment.
Miller taught at the Art Students League of New York for many years, where he influenced a generation of artists. His work reflects a specific interest in the social dynamics of the city, documenting the habits and environments of the middle class. The painting avoids idealisation, choosing instead to present the physical reality of the subjects and their surroundings. The muted colour palette and the deliberate, heavy forms contribute to a sense of stability and permanence. This piece serves as a record of urban life, capturing the intersection of consumer culture and social performance in early twentieth-century America.
