A grand-scale group portrait by John Singleton Copley, depicting the Fitch siblings in a formal, atmospheric setting.
John Singleton Copley, a painter born in Boston who later relocated to London, produced this large-scale group portrait during his mature period in England. The composition features the Fitch sisters alongside their brother, a military officer in uniform. Copley was well known for his ability to render textures, such as the sheer fabric of the white gown and the heavy wool of the military coat, with precision.
The work displays the influence of the British Grand Manner style, which Copley adopted after leaving the American colonies. The inclusion of the horse and the expansive, atmospheric sky provides a sense of scale and drama typical of aristocratic portraiture of the late eighteenth century. The figures are arranged in a staged interaction, with the sisters appearing to engage with their brother, who stands ready with his mount. The presence of the classical urn on the left serves as a conventional device to ground the figures in a setting that suggests status and cultural refinement.
Copley’s technique here demonstrates his transition from the linear, detailed style of his early American works to a more fluid, painterly approach. The lighting is managed to draw attention to the faces of the subjects, while the background remains secondary, providing context without distracting from the primary figures. This piece remains a clear example of the portraiture conventions that dominated the London art scene during the final decade of the eighteenth century, reflecting the social aspirations of the sitters through their attire and the inclusion of symbols of military service and landed wealth.
