Description
A 1777 engraving by James Mason after Gaspard Dughet, depicting a serene pastoral scene with figures by a river, framed by classical foliage.
This print, published in 1777 by John Boydell, reproduces a composition by the French painter Gaspard Dughet, often referred to as Gaspard Poussin. James Mason, a skilled British engraver, translated the original oil painting into this monochromatic medium, capturing the atmospheric depth and structured composition typical of the seventeenth-century classical tradition. The scene depicts a quiet, rural setting where a figure sits by the water, rod in hand, while another rests nearby. The composition follows the established conventions of the period: heavy, framing trees on the left and right create a natural proscenium, drawing the eye toward the distant mountains and the ruins of a structure in the middle ground. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, defines the foliage and the rocky terrain, providing a sense of scale and distance. The print was part of the collection at Houghton Hall, a significant estate in Norfolk, and reflects the eighteenth-century British interest in collecting and disseminating European Old Master works through high-quality printmaking. Mason's technique demonstrates a mastery of line and cross-hatching, which allows for a wide range of tonal values, from the deep blacks of the foreground shadows to the delicate, pale grey of the sky. This work is a fine example of the reproductive print culture that allowed audiences across Britain to engage with continental art. The inclusion of the title, the artist's name, and the publication details at the base of the print follows the standard format for eighteenth-century engravings, providing a clear record of its provenance and production. The print remains a record of the aesthetic values of the era, prioritising balance, harmony, and the idealised representation of the natural world.
