A traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyomasa depicting the Hinamatsuri Doll Festival, featuring figures with a miniature palanquin and ceremonial dolls.
This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyomasa depicts a scene associated with the third month of the lunar calendar, specifically the Hinamatsuri, or Doll Festival. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the upper section, a woman and a child are positioned before a tiered display of dolls, which are traditional offerings for the festival. The figures are rendered with the characteristic grace of the period, their garments decorated with subtle geometric patterns. The architectural setting provides a sense of interior space, framed by sliding screens and wooden flooring.
In the lower section, two men carry a miniature palanquin, or kago, across a veranda. A small figure is visible inside the palanquin, suggesting a playful or ceremonial reenactment of the festival customs. A third man stands to the left, holding a long-handled broom, adding a sense of activity to the domestic scene. The print employs a muted palette, typical of mid-eighteenth-century Japanese prints, where colour was applied sparingly to enhance the linear quality of the design. The artist uses clear, controlled lines to define the figures and the surrounding architecture, maintaining a balance between the decorative elements and the narrative action.
Ishikawa Toyomasa was active during the middle of the Edo period, a time when Ukiyo-e artists frequently documented the seasonal rituals and daily lives of the urban population. This work provides a window into the customs of the era, capturing a moment of cultural observation. The print is an example of the genre known as fuzoku-ga, which focused on the manners and customs of the people. The composition avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures and the symbolic objects associated with the festival. The work remains a clear representation of the aesthetic priorities of the time, prioritising clarity of form and thematic relevance.
