Elihu Vedder, an American artist who spent much of his career in Rome, produced this work during a period when he was deeply engaged with literary and mythological themes. The painting depicts the three Fates, figures from classical mythology responsible for spinning, measuring, and cutting the thread of human life. Here, they are shown in a celestial setting, their forms emerging from the darkness as they gather stars, which function as symbols of destiny or cosmic order.
Vedder employs a muted palette, dominated by deep shadows and subtle, earthy tones. This choice of colour reinforces the mysterious, otherworldly nature of the subject.
