A detailed Renaissance engraving by Giorgio Ghisi depicting the dramatic fall of Troy and the flight of Aeneas.
Giorgio Ghisi, a master engraver from Mantua, produced this complex composition during the height of the Italian Mannerist period. The print depicts the chaotic final moments of the Trojan War, juxtaposing the violent destruction of the city with the departure of the hero Aeneas. Ghisi demonstrates his technical command through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques, which create a sense of depth and sculptural volume across the crowded scene.
The composition is divided into distinct zones of action. On the left, soldiers engage in combat amidst the burning architecture of Troy. The right side features a more contemplative, mythological element, where figures appear in a rocky, grotto-like setting. This contrast between the frantic energy of the battle and the structured, almost theatrical arrangement of the figures is characteristic of Ghisi's approach to narrative engraving. The artist often worked from designs by other painters, and this work reflects the influence of the School of Fontainebleau, particularly in the elongated proportions and muscular forms of the figures.
Ghisi was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of large-scale works into the medium of engraving. His lines are precise, allowing for a high degree of detail in the armour, the musculature of the horses, and the architectural elements of the city walls. The print serves as a record of the period's fascination with classical mythology and the dramatic potential of the human form in motion. Collectors of Renaissance prints value Ghisi for his technical rigour and his contribution to the dissemination of Mannerist aesthetics across Europe. This museum-grade reproduction captures the tonal range of the original copperplate engraving, preserving the fine lines and dramatic shadows that define the work.
