A 1592 oil painting by Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem depicting the biblical Fall of Man with characteristic Mannerist anatomical precision.
Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem, a leading figure of the Haarlem Academy, produced this large-scale depiction of the Fall of Man in 1592. The composition reflects the influence of Italian Mannerism, particularly in the elongated, muscular anatomy of Adam and the porcelain-like skin tones of Eve. The figures occupy the foreground with a theatrical presence, their poses calculated to demonstrate the artist's mastery of the human form.
The scene is set within a dense, wooded environment that serves as a backdrop for various symbolic animals, including a monkey, a cat, and a dog, which populate the lower register. Above, a serpent coils around the tree of knowledge, offering the forbidden fruit to Eve. The lighting is dramatic, casting soft shadows across the bodies of the protagonists while maintaining a clear focus on their interaction. In the distance, a smaller, secondary scene depicts the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, providing a narrative conclusion to the primary event.
Van Haarlem was known for his interest in the nude, and this work is a clear example of his technical approach to figure painting. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and muted greens to ground the figures within the forest setting. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance complex narrative elements with a rigorous focus on anatomical precision. It remains a representative example of the late sixteenth-century Dutch interest in classical themes interpreted through a Mannerist lens.
