A serene depiction of the artist's home at Marquayrol, rendered in Henri Martin's signature Divisionist style with light-filled, dappled brushwork.
Henri Martin, a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, spent much of his later career at his property in Marquayrol, located near Labastide-du-Vert. This work captures the exterior of his home, a subject he returned to frequently. The composition focuses on a section of the house wall, partially obscured by climbing foliage and the dappled light filtering through nearby trees.
Martin employs a distinct Divisionist technique, using small, separate strokes of colour that blend in the eye of the viewer. This method allows him to represent the shifting quality of light and shadow across the plaster wall and the surrounding garden. The palette consists of greens, yellows, and soft blues, which convey the warmth of a summer day in the Lot region. A stone pedestal featuring a small sculpture stands in the foreground, providing a vertical element that contrasts with the horizontal lines of the house and the organic shapes of the climbing plants.
Unlike the more rigid scientific application of colour theory seen in the works of Georges Seurat, Martin's approach is more fluid and painterly. He uses his brushwork to create a sense of atmosphere rather than strict geometric order. The open shutters and the play of light on the wall suggest a quiet, domestic stillness. This piece reflects the artist's deep connection to his rural surroundings, where he found endless inspiration in the changing seasons and the specific light of the French countryside. The work remains a fine example of how Martin adapted Neo-Impressionist theories to suit his own lyrical and personal style, focusing on the sensory experience of a specific place.
