A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Buncho, depicting the lovers Ohatsu and Tokubei in a scene from the 'Eight Views of Lovers' series.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Buncho depicts the tragic lovers Ohatsu and Tokubei, figures drawn from the popular Bunraku play 'The Love Suicides at Sonezaki' by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. The scene belongs to the series 'Sugata Hakkei' (Eight Views of Lovers), a parody of the traditional 'Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang' theme, which was a common trope in classical East Asian art. Buncho adapts this poetic framework to the contemporary world of the Edo period pleasure quarters.
The composition features a narrow, vertical format typical of the period. Ohatsu stands outside, sheltered by an umbrella, while Tokubei is visible behind the wooden lattice of a tea house. The artist employs a restrained palette, using muted earth tones and soft greens to create a sense of quiet intimacy. The figures are rendered with slender, elegant proportions, a hallmark of Buncho's style, which often focused on the refined aesthetics of the urban demimonde. Calligraphic lines define the folds of their garments and the architectural elements of the structure.
In the background, a large lantern decorated with a floral motif provides a subtle light source, while the snowy ground suggests the cold atmosphere of the evening. The inclusion of Japanese text at the top of the print adds a literary dimension, connecting the visual narrative to the broader cultural context of the theatre and popular literature of the time. This work captures a moment of clandestine communication, reflecting the tension between personal desire and social constraints. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear registration and delicate colour application that have survived well over the centuries.
