A narrative oil painting by William Holman Hunt, depicting a scene from John Keats's poem, The Eve of Saint Agnes, featuring a couple escaping a medieval castle.
William Holman Hunt painted The Eve of Saint Agnes in 1848, shortly after the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The work draws its subject from the poem of the same name by John Keats. It depicts the moment Madeline and Porphyro escape from the castle during the revelry of the feast.
Hunt focuses on the contrast between the foreground figures and the background scene. In the foreground, the lovers prepare to depart, while a drunken reveler lies asleep on the floor, surrounded by hounds. Through the arched window, the viewer sees the chaotic, brightly lit party, which serves as a stark visual counterpoint to the quiet tension of the escape. The artist employs a meticulous approach to detail, characteristic of his early career, seen in the textures of the clothing, the stone architecture, and the scattered vessels on the floor.
The composition uses light to guide the eye. The warm, golden glow from the party illuminates the interior, casting long shadows and creating a sense of depth within the medieval setting. Hunt captures the narrative urgency of the poem, focusing on the physical reality of the scene rather than an idealised representation. The painting reflects the Pre-Raphaelite interest in literary themes and their rejection of the conventions taught at the Royal Academy. By grounding the romantic narrative in a tangible, almost gritty environment, Hunt provides a specific interpretation of Keats's verse. The attention to historical costume and architectural detail demonstrates his dedication to visual accuracy, a hallmark of his work throughout his career.
