This etching by Andrea Schiavone depicts the Entombment of Christ, a subject frequently explored by Venetian artists of the sixteenth century. Schiavone, born Andrea Meldolla, was a Dalmatian-born painter and printmaker active in Venice. His graphic work is known for a fluid, painterly approach to etching that departs from the rigid cross-hatching typical of his contemporaries.
In this composition, the figures are arranged in a dense, sculptural group around the body of Christ. The scene is set against a rocky, cavernous background, which provides a stark contrast to the soft, rounded forms of the mourners. The artist employs a series of short, rhythmic strokes to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their drapery. This technique creates a sense of movement and emotional weight, characteristic of the Mannerist style. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive, often contorted, poses that define the period.
Schiavone was heavily influenced by the works of Parmigianino, whose own etchings utilised similar experimental techniques. By avoiding the heavy, systematic shading found in traditional reproductive prints, Schiavone achieved a sketch-like quality that captures the immediacy of his artistic vision. The composition focuses on the collective grief of the figures, with the Virgin Mary and other attendants surrounding the central figure of Christ. The rocky outcrop above adds a sense of enclosure, drawing the viewer into the intimate space of the tomb. This print offers a clear example of the technical innovation Schiavone brought to the medium of etching during the mid-sixteenth century, demonstrating his ability to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the linear language of the printmaker.
