A masterful engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, depicting the Entombment of Christ with technical precision and dramatic Mannerist composition.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicts the Entombment of Christ, a subject frequently explored by Northern Mannerist artists. Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of printmakers, demonstrates his technical mastery through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The composition is arranged with a sense of theatricality, typical of the period, as figures gather around the body of Christ in a rocky, cavernous setting.
In the foreground, the instruments of the Passion, including the crown of thorns, nails, and hammer, are placed on the ground, serving as direct reminders of the preceding events. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive gestures characteristic of Mannerist art. The background features a distant view of Golgotha, where the crosses remain, providing a narrative link between the crucifixion and the burial. The print includes a Latin inscription and a coat of arms at the base, which were common features in high-quality reproductive prints of the era, often indicating patronage or dedication to a specific figure, in this case, Cardinal Federico Borromeo.
Sadeler’s ability to translate the tonal qualities of a painting into the linear medium of engraving is evident here. The play of light across the drapery and the muscular anatomy of the figures creates a sense of volume despite the monochromatic nature of the work. The scene is balanced by the kneeling figure in the foreground, whose posture draws the viewer into the emotional weight of the narrative. This print represents the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Sadeler workshop, which was instrumental in disseminating Italianate styles across Northern Europe during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
