A detailed 18th-century engraving by Domenico Cunego, reproducing Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel fresco depicting the drunkenness of Noah.
This fine art print is an etching and engraving by the Italian printmaker Domenico Cunego, reproducing the fresco of the same subject by Michelangelo Buonarroti located on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The composition depicts the biblical narrative from Genesis, where Noah, having planted a vineyard and consumed its wine, lies in a state of inebriation. His three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, are shown approaching their father, with one figure delicately covering his nudity with a cloth. In the background, a smaller figure of Noah is visible, engaged in the labour of tilling the earth.
Cunego demonstrates technical precision in his translation of Michelangelo's muscular, sculptural forms into the medium of print. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and depth, capturing the anatomical rigour characteristic of the High Renaissance original. The print includes the Latin text from Genesis 9:24-25, which provides the narrative context for the scene. The inclusion of the inscription 'Michael Angelus Bonarotivs Pinxit in Sixtino Vaticano Sacello' confirms the source of the composition, while the imprint 'In Roma Presso la Calcografia Camerale' indicates its production within the official papal printing house.
This work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in documenting and disseminating the masterpieces of the Vatican through high-quality reproductive engraving. The print offers a clear view of the figures, allowing for an examination of the dramatic gestures and the interplay of light and shadow across the human form. It is a representative example of the reproductive print culture that allowed European audiences to study the Sistine Chapel ceiling in detail during the Enlightenment period.
