A study of a drummer in motion, rendered in pen and brown wash by Dutch artist Cornelis Dusart.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this work during the later years of the Dutch Golden Age. The drawing depicts a lone drummer in motion, captured with the characteristic focus on common folk that defined the Haarlem school of genre painting. The figure wears a feathered hat and period attire, his posture suggesting a rhythmic, forward stride as he plays his instrument.
Dusart employs a technique of pen and ink combined with expressive brown wash to define the form and atmosphere. The wash creates a sense of depth and shadow, particularly in the background, which remains largely suggestive rather than detailed. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the kinetic energy of the musician. The line work is fluid, demonstrating the artist's ability to convey character through simple, gestural marks.
Such drawings were often produced as independent works of art or as preparatory studies for prints. Dusart was a prolific draughtsman and printmaker, and his interest in the daily lives of peasants and itinerant performers is evident here. The composition is balanced, with the drummer positioned centrally, his drum acting as a visual anchor. The monochromatic palette, ranging from light sepia tones to deeper brown ink, provides a sense of unity to the piece. This work offers a glimpse into the observational practices of seventeenth-century Dutch artists, who frequently turned their attention to the figures encountered in the streets and taverns of their time. The lack of a complex background ensures that the focus remains entirely on the drummer, whose expression and stance are rendered with economy and precision.
