A poignant 1890 oil painting by Vincent van Gogh, reinterpreting a social scene by Honoré Daumier with characteristic rhythmic brushwork and expressive colour.
Painted in February 1890 while Van Gogh was at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work is a direct interpretation of a wood engraving by Honoré Daumier. Van Gogh held great admiration for Daumier, whose social commentary and focus on the working class resonated with his own artistic goals. The composition features four figures, including a small child, gathered around a table to consume alcohol. The scene is rendered with the characteristic heavy impasto and rhythmic brushwork that defined Van Gogh's late period.
The colour palette is dominated by cool blues and greens, which contrast with the stark white of the sky and the child's clothing. The figures are depicted with a sense of weary resignation, their postures slumped and their expressions obscured. Van Gogh's application of paint is particularly expressive here, with swirling, agitated strokes that animate the background and suggest a restless energy. The industrial chimneys visible in the distance provide a subtle nod to the urban environment that often served as the backdrop for Daumier's original social critiques.
Unlike his earlier, more sombre depictions of peasant life, this painting shows a shift toward a more stylised and subjective approach to form. The figures are simplified, almost sculptural in their presence, yet they retain a human vulnerability. By reinterpreting Daumier's work, Van Gogh engaged in a dialogue with the masters he respected, translating their graphic observations into his own unique visual language. The painting remains a significant example of his ability to transform external source material into a deeply personal expression of human experience.
