A scene from the life of Saint Francis, this fresco by Giotto depicts Pope Innocent III experiencing a vision of the saint.
This fresco is part of the cycle depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, located in the Upper Church of the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. Giotto presents a narrative scene where Pope Innocent III sleeps in his bedchamber, while Saint Francis appears to him in a vision. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the interior of the papal chamber and the exterior architectural setting.
The artist employs a clear, structured approach to space. The bed, draped with patterned textiles, occupies the right side of the frame, where the Pope rests. Two figures sit at the foot of the bed, their postures suggesting quiet observation. To the left, Saint Francis stands in a simple habit, his form rendered with a sense of physical weight and volume that departs from the flatter, more stylised conventions of the preceding Byzantine tradition. The architectural elements, including the campanile and the roof structures, provide a sense of scale and depth, guiding the viewer through the scene.
Giotto uses a palette dominated by earthy ochres, deep reds, and muted blues. The light source appears consistent, casting soft shadows that define the figures and the folds of their garments. The attention to human emotion and the naturalistic rendering of the figures mark a shift in European art, moving towards a more observational style. This work remains a primary example of the transition from medieval iconography to the human-centred narratives that would define the Italian Renaissance. The clarity of the storytelling and the spatial organisation demonstrate the technical skill applied to this large-scale mural project.
